Advice from Authors

Catherine Forde

Don't let a good idea escape. Jot it down on a bus ticket, or text it to yourself, or stick in a notebook before it gets away.

Be inspired by real people, real places and real life situations. Pass them off as fiction. No one will ever know except you.

Get into the habit of talking to yourself. Yes, you'll sound creepy when you read your stories out loud but that's the only way to check your characters sound like real people.

If you find it hard to make a detailed plan of your story before you begin to write, it might help if you decide how you definitely want your story to end. That means you will always be working towards something.

Read. Read. Read.
